About Sam & Julia
Sam and Julia are two little mice, the best of friends, and as different as can be. Sam likes to think things through, while Julia is usually the first to jump in. Together, they explore the Mouse Mansion from attic to cellar, meeting neighbors and finding adventures behind every door.
The Mouse Mansion was created by Karina Schaapman, who grew up in the Netherlands with her single mother, originally from Indonesia. As a little girl, Karina rarely saw families like hers reflected in her neighborhood and often felt like she didn’t belong. At home, her mother taught her to be proud of who she was and showed her how to make something beautiful out of very little. You can see a bit of Karina in Julia, who lives with her mother in a small apartment and brings her curiosity wherever she goes.
In 2008, Karina began building the kind of place she wished for every child: a home where everyone is welcome. What started with cardboard and fabric scraps grew into a mansion with more than a hundred rooms. Look closely and you’ll spot floors made from ice pop sticks, tiny cakes made in bottle caps, and curtains cut from leftover fabric. There’s always another detail to discover, even after you’ve looked twice.
